Autumn Lubin says there "was nothing privileged about my earliest years," but then she overheard a conversation between her Black colleagues about what they called "the talk." This wasn't about the birds and the bees; it was about how to keep their children safe when interacting with authority figures. "This was a conversation I had never even considered having with my son," Lubin writes. "All I had learned, all I had experienced, all I could discern, was from a place of Whiteness."
